CSL StatStuff: League Needs: Blocks and Steals
Disclaimer: Below data is as of 12th March in game. All players are active players signed to CSL teams from HTML.
There are currently 420 active players with 87 PGs, 87 SGs, 84 SFs, 83 PFs and 79 Cs.
This is a series of articles that we'd like to write that answers two questions:
1) Where is the league overall in terms of ratings? What kind of players we have and what kind of players we are lacking i.e. do we have too many players with high Steals rating or too few? Perhaps this may help the draft department somehow in the years to come.
2) There are a lot of discussions, in particular during FA and Draft where GMs say: this player is average at scoring or average at rebounding. So what is average? With each category (Scoring, Defense etc) presented, we also show the average rating per category. Final article will show all averages for all ratings.
Blocks
Dikembe Mutombo and Alonzo Mourning were some of the best shot-blocking big men in the game
Are we lacking some quality shot-blockers? Only 16% (66) of the players in the entire league have a Block rating of 60 or higher. Only 5% (23) at 70 or higher and there are only 5 players with 80 or higher.
In this category, we can skip talking about point guards and shooting guards. There are only six of them with a blocks rating above 50 - perhaps that's how it should be. A guard blocking shots is extremely rare. Dwyane Wade comes to mind, Michael Jordan had his moments, but few others.
With Small Forwards, we are looking at four players above 60. Little known Alex Poythress leading the way at 70, followed by Tony Mitchell (69), Okaro White (63) and Jerami Grant (62).
At Power Forward, the picture gets a little gloomy. Only 24% of all PFs have a rating of 60 or higher. Compare that with 53% of Centers. But how happy are we with our average C having a Blocks rating of 59 and PFs at pretty awful 51?
Steals
Pressure defense is popular in CSL - but do we have the personnel to choose it?
Similar to defense rating mentioned in previous article, we seem to be lacking some solid pressure players at Shooting Guard and Small Forward. In entire CSL, we got 8% (34) of all players with a steals rating of 70 or more. Of these 34 players, 23 are point guards, 7 shooting guards, 3 small forward, and 2 power forwards.
38% (33) of all PGs have a Steals rating of 60 or higher with 26% (23) at 70 or higher.
38% (33) of all SGs have a Steals rating of 60 or higher but only 8% (7) at 70 or higher.
Do SGs need a little bit of a bump at the top end?
27% (23) of all SFs have a Steals rating of 60 or higher.
16% (13) of all PFs have a Steals rating of 60 or higher.
Centers at Steals are like PGs/SGs at blocks. Very few Cs can press. Only K. Faried, WCS and D. Howard are at 60 or higher.

Re: CSL StatStuff: League Needs: Blocks and Steals
Only 9 players are averaging 2 steals or more in the entire CSL, with a top end of 2.7. Blocks are just 2.4 max, though the blocks there of 2+ extend to 12. Interestingly enough, the SPG is almost right on with the 1996-97 NBA season, while BPG is more in line with current NBA (except Whiteside's 3.7 blocks per game outlier).
So if we want to replicate the NBA, we're right on target. But I personally wouldn't mind higher steal/block numbers to create a more diverse league.

Re: CSL StatStuff: League Needs: Blocks and Steals
The lowering of steal and block ratings was one of the goals when the csl restarted. Wouldn't we keep it at a normal level we all would go for mass steals again and the team with the best steal ratings will win the title. It was that easy and still is in dds. I think 59 at average is pretty decent for a C, given a 59 C already averages a block per game. Same for a 51 PF (look at Solomon for example).
Same goes for steal. Above 60 for a wing is already a decent steal rating. A player with 50 steal and 50 block at SF can easily average 1/1. Above 60 1.5/1.5 is possible.
I like it that we have (not too many) specialists like we have only a few very good scorer. GMs can adjust their style that way. Would we have like 50% above 70 steal, real great defenders would be worth less.

Good stuff andrei, I think distribution is very good as to not dilute the value of those specialists imo

Yup, blocks and steals are probably the most realistic out of any stats we have here in the CSL.

Good breakdown, even though the numbers suggest that we lack many specialists, but these rating scales that are currently in place seem to work well with this file, as our blocks?steals leaderboard seems to be very realistic.

Very interesting look, must have taken a lok time to put this together! It would be cool to see this in conjunction with a stat comparison side by side

I do think we have a very healthy distribution of these ratings throughout the league. I do want to mention that Kemba is the big daddy of steals.
