Losses, Lessons, and the #4 Pick

Post by Tulogit2Quit »

This past season in Boston didn’t go the way anyone had hoped (except for maybe all of the other CSL orgs). A 22–60 finish placed the Celtics at the bottom of the Atlantic Division and near the basement of the entire CSL, a far cry from the expectations that followed last year’s “retool, not rebuild” messaging given out by the new GM. Night after night, the same issues surfaced. Stagnant offense, inefficient shooting, and an inability to consistently close games wore on the fanbase, and frankly, no one inside the organization was satisfied with how it unfolded. It seemed like every night, there was a new graphic like this being made about the team:

Still, beneath the losses, there were small but meaningful signs that this season wasn't a complete waste.

Those signs started with rookie forward Dillon Jones, who more than surpassed his pre-draft expectations by capturing (game generated) Rookie of the Year honors while anchoring the team’s identity. His 11.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game only tell part of the story as his physicality, rebounding instincts, and defensive versatility made him the heartbeat of this roster all season. Alongside him, Damion Baugh showed real promise as a lead guard, averaging 7.0 assists and embracing the challenge of running an offense that often struggled to generate clean looks. His efficiency remains a work in progress, but the vision and defensive effort are undeniable. In the frontcourt, Chima Moneke was a rebounding beast pulling down 10.1 rebounds per game and consistently doing the dirty work that doesn’t show up in scoring columns. Together, that trio gave Boston a foundation it desperately needed this season after all of the roster turnover. That doesn't even include the wildcard that is Tyrese Maxey. Coming over in a shocking mid-season deal, Maxey failed to capture the hearts of the Boston faithful right away. He struggled severely while adapting to the new team only averaging 15 points per game during his first couple weeks stretching over 8 games. However, he seemed to find his footing as he averaged 27 points per game over the last 37 games of the season. The team hopes his defense will improve over the offseason, but that offense will be much needed going forward.

For now, the focus shifts to a pivotal offseason, starting with the draft. Armed with the 4th, 27th, and 28th picks in the first round, plus two additional second rounders, the Celtics have no shortage of options. Ideally, one of their two preferred targets falls to #4, allowing them to stay put and secure a cornerstone piece. If not, the front office has made it clear they’re open for business, with multiple teams already expressing interest in moving up. The direction they take will be telling. They could prioritize offense, finding a dynamic scorer to pair with Tyrese Maxey and help lift a unit that finished near the bottom in nearly every category. They could double down on identity, selecting the best defender available to reinforce their defense-first philosophy. They could also just simply trust their board and take the best player available, regardless of fit, and let the roster sort itself out over time. It's an exciting but nerve-wracking time to be a Celtics fan with so many possibilities ahead! Who knows how the board will fall when it's time for them to make their pick.

Seeing Maxey in a Celtics jersey made throw up my breakfast. Not how I wanted to start draft day lol.

Liked what you did in terms of asset accumulation this year and how you got Maxey pretty cheap. His contract is awesome. Good luck on the draft!

I can't believe there was an image out on the internet with Maxey in a Celtics jersey already lol. Had to use it. Very excited to see how the draft unfolds this season

A very in-depth and insightful look into how you found this season as a rebuilding team Tulogit2Quit. The most interesting thing to me is you hit on your draft picks and would have my vote as the GM to completely overhaul this BOS team into one with a bright future, in that you decided not to treadmill and try and contend when this is not your window.

As a fellow rebuilding team in the same division it can be hard to stay positive and motivated but you are now in a position to really shape this team with your pick coming up. The big advantage you have over every other team in the league is caproom. Your control cost as pertains to your rookies is a massive asset, moreso then any one player on your roster. I think the speed from which you pivoted to a team in good shape was sublime. Now led by one of my favourite players and, perhaps, the GOAT 3 point shooter (in time) Tyrese Maxey, I am impressed.

This team has a storied pedigree, I am glad to see it is in good hands.

Endless possibilities building around Clingan and Maxey, and some good defenders. Think we have something brewing in Boston

Looking forward to battling with you when we are both at the top instead of down here in the basement!

Another very good off-season for the Celtics concluded. Really liiked the Clingan pick, even if i t seems he will take his development a bit slower. Robert Williams can hopefully teach him the one or other thing during the season.

This roster has some really good young talent now and it will be interesting to see, if they show already some signs of what is ahead this season. Still very young, so some rough patches should be expected.

Keep the good work up, that is good GM'ing going on in Boston.

The Clingan selection was a great one. Some interesting young talent there also with Jones and Moneke. Not a fan of Maxey, though.
