2013-2014 Philadelphia 76ers Primer

Post by StOfTheStep »

PHILADELPHIA – Last season began particularly bright as the Sixers pressed forward from a mediocre season (35-31) with a bold strategy to infuse high caliber youth, while maintaining competitiveness. Prior to the start of the 2012-2013 season, GM Tony DiLeo dealt franchise SG/SF Andre Iguodala to the Denver Nuggets in a four way deal involving the Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic. In return for their All-Star caliber player, the Sixers received oft injured, albeit dynamic center, Andrew Bynum. With a young core in Bynum, Jrue Holiday, Spencer Hawes, Evan Turner, and Thaddeus Young, the future was bright for this once legendary franchise --- and then the wrath of Billy Penn set in, still sore of the Phillies championship in 2008. The centerpiece in the Iguodala deal went south, fast. Before the start of training camp Bynum underwent Orthokine treatments to facilitate healing on his arthritis ridden knees. Though, at the time, a welcome precautionary measure for their future franchise player, this trend of knee problems would continue to resurface all season long eventually leading to a completely lost season. The once prolific CSL center quickly became a joke in the throughout Philadelphia as the Philly sports fandom quipped about his setback while bowling. Disgusted with their progress, the Sixers blew up their roster just before the trade deadline, selling off their promising youth in the form of Spencer Hawes to the Cleveland Cavaliers and (2010 2nd overall pick) Evan Turner to the Indiana Pacers. After all of that misery, all the Sixers had to show for was a subpar (34-48) record.

The Philadelphia 76ers fans were overjoyed to acquire Center Andrew Bynum as the Philly came out en masse to welcome the big man. Little were they aware of the season long head ache to ensue.

Disgusted in a pitiful 2012-2013 campaign, the Philadelphia 76ers management decided to make dramatic changes in the recently promising organization. Leading up to the draft, the Philly sports atmosphere was lull, not optimistic of their 11th pick in a relatively shallow draft. Then the Sixers made it known that they were through being a spectator. In a surprising move, the 76ers dealt their rising start PG Jrue Holiday to the New Orleans Pelicans for the Pelicans 2013 1st round pick and 2014 (Top 5 Protected) 1st round pick. With the Pelicans’ 6th overall pick, the Sixers took another gamble in, once college stud center, Nerlens Noel. Originally a consensus number 1 overall pick, Noel endured an injury laden 2012-2013 NCAA year, which scared away potential top 5 suitors.

Sixers fans hold their breath as their franchise falls on the shoulders (or knees, for that matter) of another big man, this time in the form of 2013 6th overall draft pick, Nerlens Noel.

Continuing the draft, the Sixers followed up their risky 6th pick with a more orthodox one, filling their vacant starting PG position with the Syracuse prospect, Michael Carter-Williams. Carter-Williams, a traditionally oversized PG at 6’6”, was generally projected as top point guard in the draft as the Sixers were overjoyed to see the 20 year old fall to them at 11. In MCW, the Sixers gain a classic point guard with a size upside. At Syracuse, Carter-Williams often displayed the prowess of a complete point guard both offensively and defensively while maintaining a strong team first mind set and leadership ability, characteristics that the 76ers organization greatly covet.

Image
The 76ers will look to Michael Carter-Williams to steer the franchise back into relevance in this long, uphill rebuilding phase.

One of the last surviving pieces of the old 76er guard is Thaddeus Young. Drafted way back 2007 at 12th overall out of the University of Georgia Tech (as most of the present 76ers roster were still in diapers), Young has been a stalwart in an ever changing 76ers roster. The ancient (24 year old) forward will most certainly be considered as the veteran of the lineup as the Sixers will look to him to take over games in bleak situations.

Image
The fans know the ability of forward Thaddeus Young and will look to him to make his presence felt on the court along with his inexperienced teammates.

If nothing else, the Philadelphia 76ers organization is trying their best to turn around this bottom feeder CSL franchise. Only time will tell if all of their risky business will pay off or not. But at least the typically understanding and patient Philly sports crowd can admit they are trying.

I really wanted to manage the 76ers in this league...like really bad! Since they were your first choice and you had them in oCSL, I let it go and bit the bullet of managing the Knicks. Now I am kicking myself for it lol. You have a great young nucleus that will probably still struggle this year leading to a high draft pick to add to the arsenal. Nerlens Noel is a local prospect as he grew up one town over from me and I saw him play in high school before he shipped off to Tilton Academy for prep ball so he's always going to be one of my favorites. Michael Carter-Williams is also a local product as he grew up about 20 minutes from where I live and I saw him play once and now see his younger brother playing AAU ball all the time. Good luck with this young squad!

Great write up man!
Noel and MCW are good guys to build around (at least my coach bad-Brad says they got good potentials). Maybe you could trade Young for another prospect or a high draft pick to suck even more this year. Landing a top5 pick to nab Exum or whoever would be really great. Your next years pick is protected too, so adding another high pick would result in a very good starting four. I believe you own some other picks (if Im not wrong), so you should be able to find a great fifth starter. With all the capspace and cheap young guys you own, you can add some more depth during FA and voila you got a great team that could compete for a long time (rookie scale + RFA contract). Also I believe scouting will even be more fun with Myles new system. Really thrilled to have picks on my own.

Well thanks for letting me have the Sixers man! Sorry that you couldn't get them though. I knew that I was meant to be the Sixers when I got them in the oCSL, I just hope I can do them justice in this league too. Good luck this year, man!

Ha I love Big-Bad-Brad! He'll definitely lead you guys to the promise land. Maybe I can use all 500 of my 2014 2nd round picks to manage to get something this year too. Good luck this year, man!

Philly's in a good spot for a fresh new start after the Bynum disaster. Should be a fun and flexible team to manage.
