CSL StatStuff: Points per hundred Posessions

KD and his Spurs are 23rd in points per game but 9th in Offensive Efficiency (Points per Hundred Posessions)
With a number of high scoring games occurring in CSL recently, we decided to have a quick look at where we are in CSL vs the NBA in terms of average points scored (PPG) and average points scored per hundred possessions (PPHP). The Strategy limitations introduced a few seasons ago are there precisely to keep CSL in line with the NBA and move away from teams averaging 120+ points per game.
(Last season's stats used for NBA)
Points per game is usually a good indication of team's ability to score but Points per 100 Posessions shows the team's ability to score efficiently.
What is a Posession? We found a number of simple and complex definitions. The easiest way to define it, however, is to have a look at the below formula:
Posession = FGA + 0.475 x FTA - ORB + TO
If you add the above numbers for each game you get the number of posessions per game. Simple multiplication with PPG will show the how many points the team scores per 100 possessions.
Good news is that we are on par with the real life. Below numbers compare the average League Points per game and Points per hundred possessions.
CSL PPG
103.5
NBA PPG
102.3
CSL PPHP
104.2
NBA PPHP
103.9
CSL is slightly higher in both stats with more teams playing some efficient offense in CSL compared to NBA.
....4 teams averaging 110+ PPHP in CSL and 2 in NBA
....16 teams averaging 105+ PPHP in CSL and 9 in NBA
....23 teams averaging 100+ PPHP in CSL and 27 in NBA
Perhaps the last point is an indication that CSL is somewhat behind NBA in parity. More teams in NBA averaging 100+ PPHP than CSL. With that in mind, we decided to calculate the Standard Deviation across the CSL and NBA to see if the two leagues are comparable.
For those unfamiliar, here is the definition of Standard Deviation:
In statistics, the standard deviation is a measure that is used to quantify the amount of variation or dispersion of a set of data values. A low standard deviation indicates that the data points tend to be close to the average of the set (i.e. High Parity), while a high standard deviation indicates that the data points are spread out over a wider range of values (i.e. Low Parity).
For CSL PPHP the Standard Deviation is 5.5 while for NBA it is 3.2. In terms of Points per game the Standard Deviation in CSL is 6.9 while it is only 3.5 in NBA.
Is this an indication that CSL is still struggling with parity compared to real life? Season is young though - lets see if this improves as we go along.
