CSL StatStuff: game leaders

Post by andrei »

Its been a while since we posted an edition of CSL StatStuff. My company decided to give me a few licenses of MS Office so I decided to put Excel to good use.

I would like to show you something I've been thinking about for some time and thought that some of it would be pure fun, while some could be useful. I copied the entire Schedule (so far) into excel and after adding a few extra columns created something interesting.

You will see some tables below - the formatting is not phenomenal but readable as I wanted to include as much info as possible. If you want to have a look at the raw file - let me know and I can forward.

(note: I removed Fake players but there may be some D-Leaguers in there)

Which player led all scorers in most games? What was the average score of this player in all these games? (includes players that led all scorers in 10 games minimum)

Name... #of games... Average PPG
1 Paul George.. 38.. 38.3
2 Kevin Durant.. 33.. 38.5
3 Russell Westbrook.. 26.. 38.4
4 Blake Griffin.. 23.. 35.0
5 Anthony Davis.. 22.. 32.7
6 Kyrie Irving.. 22.. 33.5
7 Jabari Parker.. 22.. 33.7
8 Klay Thompson.. 19.. 31.7

13 Kevin Love.. 16.. 32.8
14 Al Jefferson.. 16.. 31.4
15 Goran Dragic.. 15.. 30.2

26 Monta Ellis.. 10.. 31.1
27 Kyle Lowry.. 10.. 25.5
28 Carmelo Anthony.. 10.. 36.6

Paul George is having a crazy season. He played 48 games so far and led all scorers in 38 of them. Moreover, he averages 38.3 ppg in these games. Most of the payers averaging 30+ and the lowest here is Kyle Lowry with 25.5 and highest James Harden with 40.3.

14 Al Jefferson.. 14.. 11.4
15 Gorgui Dieng.. 14.. 12.5
16 Jarnell Stokes.. 14.. 13.6
17 Andre Drummond.. 13.. 11.7

No surprise here but its close. Davis appeared in 50 games and led all rebounders in 27 of them. Love, Faried and Griffin also crack 20 game mark. Griffin only played in 36 games. Everybody except for KD are in double figures with Love leading the way at 16.1 boards per game

30 Jeff Teague.. 11.. 6.9
31 Tony Parker.. 10.. 7.1

Interesting as there are only two players in double figures, Rubio with 11.1 and our own Mike Conley with 10. We can also see that 12 players led all passers in 20 games or more.
Congrats to season 16 ASL champion SoulKey. For the Swarm!

Really interesting stuff here, George is so dominant and it's no surprise seeing him at #1 in Average PPG. Nice to see Parker so high as well, he's already a star and on the brink of superstardom. Kevin Love by these metrics is a top tier player, something I didn't anticipate. With WAS's GM back that trend should continue. Too bad Howard got injured, given what he's putting up now he might have been top 5 in both Average PPG and Average RPG. Still nice to see him listed. I think Harden would be higher as well and it's a shame Davis got hurt. Rubio at #1 in Average APG is great to see, hopefully he continues to rack up the assists with Howard back.

No surprise here in terms of the PPG category as the top 3 are in systems where they can have 50 shots a night and easily 100 touches a game without any repercussions.

This stupid engine...

If anything, this shows me how good AD is - to still be as high as he is on these lists with a much more complete team around him. Also makes me wonder how ridiculous of a stat line he'd put up if he got to play in Orlando with 11 other paraplegic scrubs who wouldn't care if he shot 50 times a game. Good on Willy though, he's getting the most possible out of his superstar and that's smart.

Ty Lawson can't just score, he can also pass. #4 in assists on the list. Excited to have him on my team.

Can't find the post. "I screenshot it on my broken phone"

But I did say Paul George would be the MVP before the season started on the way to being right

There's actually one big setback when you are playing alone in a team with lots of offensive scrubs around. Not only yours but other players' FG%s goes down a lot cause there's simple nobody to create for the role players and no one to take the load off the superstar. It's easy to see this with Horford and Rose, the years that Derrick had to play alone he averaged 25.7 at 44% shooting (on 22 attempts). Now he's shooting less, at "only" 18 FGA per game, yet he's scoring even more per 36 minutes as he's putting up 26.04 a game at 48% shooting. He's getting to the line more, turning the ball over at the same rate even (2.0 to 2.0) even though back then in 2014 (his season I'm using to compare) FCP was hardly existent.. And back in 2014, we went on a 24-4 run to end the year, with Derrick playing 28 of his 49 games there. This run put his %s up to a respectable level because when he was playing by himself he was struggling to hit 42% if I'm not mistaken.

I believe my guys do much more now with much less effort. That's a win-win situation when you have good players on O and D. Also our defense has been absolutely fantastic with guys forcing less offensively, holding teams to incredible FG% numbers.

Good article there, Andrei. There's a lot to be learned with those articles, indeed. I love stats, of course I'm a ratings guy but they are worthless if stats are not good enough, can't keep up to the ratings. We're doing our best to evaluate stats and try to take the best out of every player we have.

I actually went to the extreme (re. Marco) so Howard could get more touches. The next (starting) high man in PPG is Beal at 12.8 with Gibson (6th man) at 15.2. Our offense (in terms of PPG as a team) hasn't been great (pre-injury to Dwight) but my plan was to get a guy who can maximize our role players in Rubio and sit on Dwight's production. The games we've won have been on rebounding and defense.

Love the stats stuff! Looks like we're pushing up the rankings a bit, but definitely could use some work on the front court...

I think one of the most overlooked part of Paul George's game is his extraordinary rebounding in which he is not only ranked 20th but the only SG or non frontcourt player to be listed.

Great article andrei very nice indeed.
