this looks interesting, perhaps a bit too wordy?
how much maximum salary can I absorb in a trade if my current payroll is $80 million and I am trading away a player worth $20 million
To determine how much maximum salary you can absorb in a trade when your current payroll is $80 million and you are trading away a player worth $20 million, you need to consider various salary trade restrictions based on your team's salary status post-trade.
1. **Current Payroll**: $80 million
2. **Salary of Player Being Traded Away**: $20 million
3. **New Payroll After Trade (before absorbing new salary)**: $80 million - $20 million = $60 million
Since your payroll after the trade is $60 million, it is important to note whether this places you under the salary cap or under the luxury tax threshold:
- **Salary Cap**: $63,700,000 ^1^
- **Luxury Tax Threshold**: $76,900,000 ^1^
### Trade Salary Absorption Rules:
Given your new payroll of $60 million, you would be under the salary cap. According to the rules:
- If a team is under the salary cap, the maximum incoming salary in a trade can be either 1.50 times the outgoing salary plus $100,000, or the available cap space, whichever is greater ^2^ .
### Calculation:
- **Outgoing Salary**: $20 million
- **Incoming Salary Allowance**: 1.50 x $20 million + $100,000 = $30,100,000
However, since you are under the salary cap by $3,700,000 (i.e., $63,700,000 - $60,000,000), you need to check if this cap space allows for greater absorption:
- **Available Cap Space**: $63,700,000 - $60,000,000 = $3,700,000
### Conclusion:
You can absorb up to $30,100,000 in salary in the trade as it is greater than the available cap space of $3,700,000, provided this does not push your total payroll beyond other caps or thresholds like the luxury tax or the hard cap ^2^ . Make sure that any additional salary absorbed keeps your total payroll under the luxury tax threshold of $76,900,000 to avoid penalties.

I like the league as it is. Its pace allows to gameplan if you want and to study the draft class with enough time to make moves if you consider that's what you want. The CBA makes you to really have to plan in advance. These are things I like, but of course each one of us has different preferences. My lack of activity this season is not for a lost interest in the league, but for some real life stuff. That's my two cents.
