After a rough loss to Atlanta in the playoffs we knew major changes had to be made. The team was overhauled and the perimeter depth was gutted after moving Delly/Booker and parts for Nerlens Noel. Rival GM's maligned our shooting, stating a heavy zone would be able to counter our offense. This led to two key acquisitions, JP Macura and Glenn Robinson III. We had very little in terms of tradable assets to build up our perimeter depth off the bench.
Let's look closer at JP Macura. He was our primary target in the draft but we weren't willing to move major assets (see Bell/Crabbe/Joseph/etc.) for a late 1st which was where JP Macura went. After a quick conversation with Doug (PHX GM) we were able to provide a roster spot for him in return for our man. Macura is an elite 3 point shooter but we'll have to see how much volume he will provide. If he can give us 15-20MPG and space the floor that's all we need from him at this point. His ratings are solid and he is solid across the board. The makeup of this team is defense, defense and more defense but we are highly aware of our strengths and weaknesses.
Can this late 1st rounder play a major role on a potential contending team?
The next key acquisition was Glenn Robinson III. With only our tax payers MLE we missed out on targets such as Hollis Thompson and Brandon Knight, but that may have been a blessing in disguise. Robinson provides solid handles, defense, and elite 3 point shooting. He has positional versatility and can play the 2-3 and 4 spots without issue.
The 29 year old sharpshooter was given a 3 year deal and we are thrilled to add him to the roster
Cory Joseph/Mike Conley/Nigel Williams-Goss
Allen Crabbe/JP Macura/Antonius Cleveland
DeMarre Carroll/Glenn Robinson III
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist/Jordan Bell
Jahlil Okafor/Nerlens Noel
Is this team a contender? Tough to say, clearly Boston/Detroit and Miami are the cream of the crop and Atlanta/Chicago/Washington are strong as well but we believe we have a top 5 defense (league wide) and have added enough shooting to give our bigs space down low to operate. Okafor is poised to have a breakout season and we wouldn't be surprised if he can give us 20/10 on a nightly basis.
