The Brian Schmitz Report: Magic Maximum Capspace

Post by WillyJakkz »

Brian Schmitz: I've been privy to the majority of the Front Office and War Room decisions that have been made available to me thus far into the CSL Draft and I'm told that once these deals and Draft Day trades all go down and come to fruition, that the Orlando Magic have cleared the required capspace to offer a veteran maximum contract. Again, the Magic have cleared space to make an offer of a veteran maximum contract... So what does it mean for the team, I'm not certain but I do know they'd have to be able to offer in essence a $20M contract. Will they? Who knows. Will they go for a LeBron James or a Kevin Durant or perhaps attempt to outbid on a restricted FA such as a Michael Kidd-Gilchrist who we know GM WillyJakkz is quite high on? Again this is the information I've received and doesn't mean they will actually go after those guys but the capspace is available but it only makes sense considering they have a Superstar in Paul George so you'd think they'll make a push for someone of note.

So I assume you have around 24m in capspace? KD's and LeBrons' max contracts are around 22.5 and 24.5 if Im not wrong.

16.4 and 19.1
20.1 * 1.05 or 1.075 (depending on the game) and 22.1 * 1.05/1.075 is way above what you posted.

Only time will tell if this was a wise move.

I think it's always a wise move to try and put a superstar like PG, who is young, with a superstar like LBJ or KD.

I'd have to agree with this. It's at the very least. Worth the risk in my opinion, even if it fails, usually you have set up some nice pieces or cap space to deal with.

I don't think there's a scenario in which that's not a good idea for any team. I don't know whether either one will sign with Orlando, but Orlando has to try, no question. Also there are other max caliber players out there. doesn't have to be limited to those two.

Yeah not seeing anyway clearing cap is a bad move considering Paul George is locked in for 3yrs so whether I go for a player or players and things don't work what's the downside?

I think they'll go for assets to put around George and keep him the star otherwise Willy won't be able to boost up George's stats and value if he's scoring 20 a game because LeBron or Durant joins :)

You can try MKG all you want, but it would just be a waste of time. I'm matching any offer for Henson or MKG.. Not tryna sound like a dick just saying

The only possible downside is that if you don't land anyone, you have probably given up few good assets and got nothing on return. That means George is one step further from the title.

But indeed it's a good move, might pay off bigtime.

That'll be interesting.

Not sure either are max candidates.

I agree. But its free agency and overpay always happens. Hoping with the new cap that's not the case

To look for complementary pieces makes more sense IMO,

Yeah, the market for Durant/LBJ is sizeable but I could see a number of tier 2 agents that would sign with ORL. Great core, already have a 1st option and I like the moves they've made.

Depends, where we're headed we're not looking at ourselves as a Tier 2 team so we won't downsale ourselves when the reality is we do have a young Superstar who does have a ring, we have good young players, we've made some moves to improve our supporting cast, and we have capspace to offer so we can make a strong case for any Tier FA(s) we intend to go after.

If we don't get our target whoever he or they may be, we'll still have the caproom to improve and as stated Paul George is locked in, he's not expiring so no worries of him leaving or FA's perhaps looking at it as maybe a 1-2 yr short term deal and not too many other potential suitors can say that (CHI- Rose expiring DET- Teague Williams expiring though they have Drummond) the Pelicans seem to be the huge threat.

You forgot about: Sacramento, Phoenix, Washington and, especially, San Antonio. Also I think you are a level behind Detroit, Chicago or Phoenix. But that's only my opinion. Will be an interesting offseason. However, I think there are some teams ahead of you right now. At least if it comes to LBJ and KD.
I also think, the argument andrei mentioned once, is a very important one. Like andrei, I think that KD and LBJ want to be the superstars on the team they join. In Orlando they would have to share the spotlight with PG.
