December Rookie Ladder
As we approach the halfway point of the season, we've gotten a solid idea as to which rookies are legit and which are in desperate need of some extra TLC. With the month of December ending this past sim, let's take a look at the rookie ladder through the end of 2025.
1. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, PG, BKN
SGA already looks like a seasoned vet with the impact he's made on the Brooklyn Nets. Averaging 17 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds, he looks like a perennial all-star already. His shooting splits of .43.5/.33/.75 will improve over time, and his defense will continue to improve as well. He's helped lead the Nets to the top of the Atlantic division so far and you might as well just hand him the rookie of the year now. Speaking as a totally not butthurt Clippers GM, this was a great year to have the number one pick.
2. Bruno Fernando, C, MEM
Fernando has been a bit of a surprise thus far with the impact he's making on both ends of the court. He's been a little inefficient for my taste at 44% shooting for a center, but he's 3rd in the CSL with 2.6 blocks per game, and averaging a near double-double. That's legit impact for a rookie center, even if he is on one of the league's worst teams so far. The Grizzlies look like they found their long term answer at center.
3. Ky Bowman, PG, LAL
Bowman's numbers certainly look the part and stand out in a relatively weak class. 16 points and 5 assists with a 52% true shooting percentage, Bowman looks like the offensive savant he was made out to be in the pre draft process. It remains to be seen what kind of impact that will have on long-term winning, especially with his atrocious defense, but the Lakers seemed to have done well with this pick. He's as offensively talented as predicted, and the Lakers have been very respectable this season.
4. Kendrick Nunn, PG, NOP
Nunn sat the first month or so of the season due to the trade that never happened, but since joining the Pelicans on the court has been a steady contributor off the bench. 11/3/3 with some solid shooting numbers including nearly 37% from three, Nunn looks like he could be a solid 3rd guard for a team going forward. He's made an impact on the defensive end as well, averaging over a steal a game and has a 96.7% STP%.
5. RJ Barrett, SF, OKC
Barrett has been surprisingly efficient this year, shooting 48/35/75 and scoring 11 points a game. I had concerns about him being a black hole on offense, but he's been pretty solid all things considered. He's not much of a creator for others and doesn't force any turnovers, but he should find his way as a reliable scoring wing in this league going forward.
Next five: Daniel Gafford (C, MIL), Keldon Johnson (SF, BOS), Shamorie Ponds (PG, OKC), Brandon Clarke (PF, OKC), Brian Bown (SF, PHI)

Re: December Rookie Ladder
Really interesting names out there other than Shai. He seems to be one of the very few rookies that are really ready for CSL play and he’s running away with this award so much he probably wins it unanimously.
I have no idea about how good or bad those players are but it’s likely to be a good class overall. Hope Bowen can rise in these rankings with starters’ minutes and more offensive responsibilities

Are these also the rookies getting the most playing time? I feel like a lot of rookies aren't playing much this year, but I haven't looked at the numbers

Re: December Rookie Ladder
Fernando is a nice get for the Grizzlies. Like his play.
But SGA is clearly in another league in this rookie call imo.
The way Brooklyn plays with him this year is such an upgrade from almost an identical squad, wow.

Re: December Rookie Ladder
This class is definitely worse than the prior star studded ones. Yet we are still waiting for the plus 10 boosts which might help many to become a top30 potential player. I like SGA a lot if he can get his shooting up. He’s a player that gets you wins. Def rating has become way more valuable in 19 imo.
For our rookies I’m super happy with keldon and windell. Keldon really can be become a top 50 guy when he develops his shot and lindell is exactly what I was hoping for. Stud defender and a good shooter. It looks like rooks aren’t winning you games though and experience really matters. That’s why I think older teams also perform better in 19 while they „might“ be a little less talented than younger teams. Just my feeling though

Really happy with Gafford. He's great defensively, so much that I have turned down automatically all the offers I have received for him.

Re: December Rookie Ladder
Nunn gets a B- so far from me, solid but not amazing. He can struggle with inefficiency sometimes, but he knows his role and won't take too many shots.

Re: December Rookie Ladder
SGA is far ahead on this list imo. He's been playing great for Brooklyn and look at how much better they're playing this season compared to last as a team.

SGA has been a savior for us. Allows us to be incredibly flexible with lineups as he can play three different positions and be a legit difference maker.

Re: December Rookie Ladder
So far this class besides the top few picks, most rookies have been underwhelming thus far. I wonder if it's because they are raw, or are lacking playing time.

Fernando has been great for us but we do see some good potential in him still. I really like the 6 free throws he attempts per 9 shots

Good stuff. There are definitely a few rookies doing some nice things (mainly SGA, Fernando and Bowman), but overall it looks like an underwhelming season by the rookies.

Re: December Rookie Ladder
This is fantastic, I love reading these rankings. This rookie class seems reasonably strong with a few gems. The future is bright for sure.
