Quick question about UFAs - do you always have the option to outbid for a UFA? I took a look at old FA threads to get a sense of how it works, but it looks like one day is simmed every time, and no player ever signs just one day after getting an offer.

I understand you can see other people's bids, so is UFA essentially like an auction and as long as you're willing to pony up you can keep your player?

No option. He signs with your first, you win when it comes to UFA's.

You can only see other bids if the player is considering them I think. If someone snakes you with a bid and then the player signs, you would have no idea.

Oh wow, interesting. Surprised this doesn't happen more often then.

That is why you see so many terrible contracts here. Many GM's afraid to lose them so overpay UFAs, avoid snake and guarantee a return.

Do FAs have demands or a price that they would accept right away?

Yes to both but no guarantee they accept straight away even if their demand is met.

Cool thanks, honestly can't remember a thing about how it all works. Might be wrong but I don't think I've ever done a non-PA FA before.

It's not really outbidding. There have been many instances where a fa has chosen to resign at a discount as opposed to taking the highest offer. This is especially true to the hometown team, especially if that team is a winner.

I am curious how fa would be if we only allowed the highest offer to sign a fa and would only use the game if the two offers were the exact same. You could definitely start diversifying the talent throughout the league that way

FA is definitely a point of contention and one we are looking to improve. There have been some good ideas thrown out to us this season that we are considering to implement moving forward that might solve a lot of the problems we see from both the game and saw with PAs.

A transparent, straight-out auction would be interesting.

Glad to hear. Important to share what they may be because potential FA decisions factor into moves everyone is making.

Might be a good idea from a media/article idea too. Throw out some wiretaps with speculation of what insiders hear the league is looking good stuff and why. May or may not be true but would drum up good discussion. Only certain people know what you're considering so it's hard for anyone to just wrote it on their own.

I feel offer transparency will be key to any FA process reform. "Snaking" shouldn't happen because in real life, an agent is trying to get the best overall deal for his client. There's no way he wouldn't mention what the highest bid was, etc.

I like the idea of potential articles discussing changes to these systems from GMs. Changing this system in particular is all about finding the right balance between the unrealistic decisions that the game makes and not creating too much additional work or potential agent bias that PAs could bring. Unless we have PAs who don't manage a team at all, we will always deal with GMs thinking the PAs have too much power in the balance of the league - even if they are trust worthy.

The old PA system was also a TON of work for everyone involved and there was a solid 2-3 week delay during the off-season just to put everything in when we used them so we would want to avoid that too.

You can see all offers by other teams by logging in into the commish account via commish page bug. So it's no shot in the dark at all. Most GMs around here are always aware of what other teams offer after the first sim. Also it's more likely a player resigns when you bid on him from day one.

Interesting, thanks for the info. Looking at past FA I was surprised to see almost no half-decent FA switch teams, so I was wondering why that was the case.

5th year and the ability to check out what others are offering makes it nearly impossible.
